if, as a country, you want to host a major international tournament you need to let the contestants into the country.  If you want to exclude the contestants you can't host the tournament.

No question in my mind there is no other way that's not discriminatory.

There's a feeble joke in this about their convict history but what the authorities have done to this sportsman is no laughing matter at all!

The joke is that the convicts are no longer the issue it is the excess of prison guard mentality. What is going on in Australia right now is shameful really and I don't mean with the tennis player but even that was purely political.

The sportsman who lied on his visa application form? Australia have always been fairly harsh with their immigration policy, I think a lot of normal people would have had the same treatment.

True. I simply meant some elites are worth more than celebrity status and inspiring star attraction than most of the rest. A culture minister should know that.

If the aussie state's harsh measures are deemed necessary in a country the size of the EU and a pop of less than Belgium and Holland combined, then who am I to disagree?

At the time of my writing I wasn't aware of the - ahem - discrepancy in Djokovic's visa application.

If an honest application would have resulted in refusal to enter Australia then I have to recant my earlier position: Oz needs to allow in contestants if it wants to host the tournament but not to the extent of allowing false visa applications.

I did say there are many angles to this story and everyone seems to have a different one!
