What do people pay?

I've briefly touched on the subject with him in our lunch break today. He basically says to make it worthwhile him working to cover costs and earn a wage he needs £125. I know he thinks because its Arb work that I can just bang another £25 on top of a job and all is well, but I'm just starting out in an area that's overrun with tree guys and quite often I may not get that kind of money myself, and I genuinely don't believe I can afford to pay that kind of money for what he brings to the table (he does have his 38 and 39 but with no experience).

We should all be charging more and paying more, but it just ain't like that.

My kit, my insurance, my time pricing and running the show.

I probably don't clear £125 myself most days.

Nobody ever said life was fair.

If you're in it for the money you're in the wrong game.

And this sums it up perfectly

I think you have your answer.

In an ideal world it would be great to pay everyone a better wage no matter what they do but..

Does he think he can get £125 from someone else? FOr £100 a day I would expect to have a really excellent groundie who knows the job inside out, I couldnt see many people paying £125 unless they are running a team etc.

Good luck and I hope you can stay mates no matter what happens.

I suppose it also depends what he's making a day in his own work?

If he's doing more than £100 a day clear then that Could be reason he wants more.

Maybe, but then he'd also need to realise that doing his own work and working for someone else are two different things entirely.

If he has his 38&39 why don't you let him get some experience. Then you'd be paying him a 'climbers' wage for climbing? One way of looking at it...

Obviously there are pros and cons to working with close friends, personally for me I think it's worth the extra to have someone with me who I know and trust - even if it does mean they can prob get away with more than an employee I didn't know would.

Hows about a percentage solution that both of you can agree on when you need his help.. Say 55/45 split on profit..

If that could be arranged, he might see it as working for himself and not working to fill your pockets...

For me, the fact that he's there when you need him is worth something.. then theres the devil you know...

I don't think you understand the way this business works sometimes.

The problem lies in this industry is that there are too many aeroplane pilots wanting too much kicking the arse out of the industry. They never realise that they are quiet because they want to much.

There is a figure, different for each firm that they can afford to pay for different staff.

I think your being generous at 100 a day if he cant rig etc

Tell him just to turn up with his lunch and ppe / water proofs. get yourself another saw and get him to use it. Why pay him to use his saw.

I think 125 is really taking the pee, and him being a friend and you a new start up means he's leaning on you a bit.... Call his bluff is say, he may well soon be back asking for work because it didnt work out lol
