I used to drive for a Landscaping firm and didn't get any extra pay for it, while the other guys were in the canteen drinking tea I was out in the yard checking the van's oil, water, tyres, lights etc, we used to work all over Ireland so they'd be snoring away in the passenger seats while I was doing a seven hour drive back form Cork to Belfast after busting my balls all day. Put a scrape in the van one day because of a plonker drove the van into a right tight corner and I had to reverse it out for him. Boss deducted £20 a week from my wages for about six months to cover the little ten inch scrape plus all the dents and scrapes other people had put in the van over the years. So for six months I actually got paid less for carrying the responsibility of the van, tools and passengers for less than they guys sleeping in the passenger seats! If you want someone to drive for you they should get a little extra!

Just taken a full time gardening job on a permanent contract. Salary + overtime + sick pay + holiday pay + pension. Less hours, less stressful, easier work than the tree work i have been doing for past 6 years. So how come it pays £4000 more per year? Just doesnt make sense to me.

I can't make sense of it either, least not till you give a fuller account of what your doin now against what you did before...

But in general I suspect it works both ways... how many gardeners would give their right arms to be in another industry?... I suspect many...

How the hell does someone take out money from an employee for damaged equipment?...

Its people like that that give good employers a bad rep.... scumbags...

They can work for as little as they like Mick but they can never compete with efficiency, some of these ill equipped guys are are out there for two or three days doing tree work that others here could smash out in a morning. I dont see a problem.

Bob

I'm not talking about companies I'm talking about the money that individual climbers get from employers, large or small.

There's still a decent living to be made, but only working for yourself.
