Im  guessing about 2.5-  3 days but I normally get it wrong on estimating how long something takes.

I'm normally wrong on estimating too! Your eyes play tricks on you.

 

It was 2 days total, what slows it down is dead elm is pretty tough and stringy, and quite a bit of the logs had been cut too long to fit in the splitter so you had to try and get them end on, which is slow and fiddly.

Fair play, I always try to split elm green as I remember doing rings with hammer and wedges from the big dead ones in the 80s that were rock hard after standing dead for a decade.

Elm has interlocking grain which makes it hard to split. That's the reason it was first choice for wagon wheel hubs and seat bottoms, very resistant to splitting.

Chopped this load of Poplar, Pine and Ash this weekend with the trusty axe… aching today!

Snap, been clearing up wind blown ash and elm from the lane side.

I describe it as foraging but wood goblin is better.

Bl**dy elm is a nightmare to split.

Straight elm is ok. Split it as green as possible, goes hard when dead. Nothing I see nowadays is as bad as the big old twisted elm rings that we used to bang a row of steel wedges in as a teenager in the 80s.
