When I was about 14 me and a mate heard that a gypsy at the local site would buy eels. We spent all day trying to catch them thinking we we going to make a mint. We only caught one, biked 3 miles to the site and found the old boy who was delighted. He then started going from caravan to caravan asking if anyone could lend him 10 bob. Neither of us had a clue what 10 Bob was till he gave it to us. A disappointing days work

I was reading else where about old trades which got me thinking about trades that I don't seem to see any more.

 

Blacksmith, not seen a proper one in years, we've got plenty of Farriers around these parts, I assume that's because we've got a lot of horse racing stables in and around Newmarket.

We have a chain maker near us. I spent a morning with him to see how he makes specialist chains for forestry and also cranes. He's fourth generation of his family.

when a hanging took place it was like the local fair coming to town ! everyone would go! the hangman use to sell bits of the rope as souvenirs, to the children and strange people! that is where the saying money for old rope comes from! I'm here all week !
