What gets me is religious people claim the universe is to marvellous to have not been the product of design, so god had to have created it, but then god who by definition must be more marvellous had no maker :confused1:

Agreed, it is totally irrational.

As a follow on from Hairychest's cartoons post, I would be genuinely interested to hear from the Christians on this forum on what they make of followers of other faiths who are just as sure as you that their God is the one true God. Are they deluded, and why?

Seems a bit harsh to lambast anyone with faith, whatever it may be, but I suppose it's something to point your finger at.

It fulfills many lives, a life saving crutch in many instances( can't be a bad thing surely), neither is atheism if that's your choice, it's all individual opinions and that'll never change. Money, greed and jealousy cause many troubles, I think maybe religion can be an overused excuse for inequalities in the world.

As for terrorism in the name of religion, well like everyone else it's hard to see any answers, or, sadly, any end.

I have Christian faith and have found that there is REAL life transforming power in the Gospel. What other people believe is their own business.

I used to be violently opposed to the gospel and all forms of organised religion. But something happened to me that totally changed my life.

I have no room to judge anyone on what they believe in.

One day we will find out wether our beliefs are founded on truth, or not.

I'm certainly not going to try and change anyone's point of view by a couple of posts on an arb forum.

Also you won't find me ridiculing you or insulting you because of what you believe in or don't believe in.

Just my humble opinion.

Best wishes

Timon

Christian belief may seem irrational to a lot of people today but it's worth remembering that that 'difference' and strength of belief saved Europe from becoming part of a vast Islamic Caliphate under the control of the Ottoman Turks.

We owe a lot to what used to be called Christendom (or Christian Europe) for the freedoms we have today. To dismiss it's pivotal role is to completely underestimate the significance of how it shaped the way we live now.

If the forces of Islam had indeed defeated the Christian armies of Europe at various decisive battles in history we would all now probably be Muslim, for which the punishment for apostasy is death. The mere fact you're sitting here discussing religion in such an open and safe way lets you know you're in a 'Christian' country or if you'd prefer.....a 'post-Christian' country.

I suppose what I'm saying is that we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss Christianity out of hand. It could easily be argued that that Christianity or at the very least - a Christian ethos forms a large part of the DNA of modern western civilisation/democracy, a way of life much of us take for granted.

Given the barbarity of the spanish empire over the whole of europe during the 15th and 16th centuries and the almost total destruction of the dutch republic because of their refusal to accept the love of the christian god monster, I humbly suggest that it may be a little bit more complicated than that.
