If you employ someone to do a specific task, what do you expect?

Certainly not argument, refusal to work or complaint. If you feel that strongly then perhaps carefully & respectfully discuss your opinion over lunch. Then back to the task at hand straight afterwards

if your subbied in by another tree firm its hard to complain/alter about the work, but if your asked about what to do with a tree and the client says "i want to topped" or "limbed" then i ususally find you can discuss what long term impact this will have and the come round to 20-30% reduction

I am about to sacrifice a long standing contract because I won't sacrifice my standards for what they want done. It will kill me knowing another firm is doing the work in there because it was a steady flow but perhaps i will sleep easier at night knowing I haven't dropped my standards, perhaps however I will feel differently when the mortgage bill comes through.

It's a choice, a wise one at that. Bills will still be paid because your responsible and you are not willing to settle for less and lower your own standards in the process. Good for you!:thumbup1:

What did they ask you to do?

I suppose it happens in many different occupations.

Say you were a classic car specialist, perhaps in Aston Martins, and somebody came along with a beautiful original DB5 and wanted you to put in wide alloy wheels, flared arches, bonnet scoop and American V8 and was paying top dollar, would you tell him where to go or just take the money because someone else surely would.

yeah or a woman with beautiful long hair goes to the hairdresser requesting a skinhead to save on shampoo and they won't do it out of principle
