The Eleven plus is still alive and well up here, my son who was top of his class at primary, he did not wish to take the 11+, many of his peers did. He went to the local comprehensive, his peers went to the grammar. He got 7 "A"stars plus other "A"s and a few "B"s. He achieved higher results than any of his peers.

 

He's done maths, further maths, chemistry and physics at A level and is hoping to study maths at Warwick.

 

You don't need to go to the grammar school to do well, its down to hard work

 

No off but grammar schools teach a lot more than how to pass exams; or at least they did. They used to teach how to behave in the world, common courtesy, common sense, how to communicate properly, how to present oneself, how to spell (lol), how to respect people before you've judged them and so on. My nephews have more A's than an A list and haven't got a flippin clue. Can't cook, can't figure anything out, can't think for themselves, can't change a lightbulb, can't do anything practical, can't read unless it's on a screen, haven't got a scooby about how the world REALLY works. All they know is the guff modern pc schools teach them. Crap imo.

I have to agree with everyone on this forum because they all have a valid point of view. When I was in the Navy my step-father voted (Conservative) by proxy for me which when I left the Navy changed to Labour for me and I've since changed my mind again by not voting at all this last election. So maybe read Nick Davies, 'Flat Earth News' about all the made-up news in all our Newspapers. And maybe try 'Hedgemony or Survival' Noam Chomsky about the Western governments manufacturing consent for our foreign wars by scaring people into believing we are so much under attack by terrorists that we need to go to war(just what the terrorists want)! Or: 'O lord grant me the courage to change the things that I can change, grant me the grace to accept the things I can't change and grant me the wisdom to tell the two apart'. Everybody has a vested interest in Money/power which is after all what politics is all about control in the oil in the middle-east. Now I'm off out into our lovely(Cornish) countryside for a walk and to enjoy some rare summer sunshine.

Your first post on the subject leaves little doubt that you and your other brother did not receive the education of your eldest brother because of a drop in financial fortune.

Tommer, don't be so naïve mate, the vast majority of people in the west are educated to the point where almost everything that happens in politics is viewed with a sceptical eye. Some even look on the current political situation with abject cynicism (me for instance), and these people wont be anti-globalisation protesters wearing Vendetta Guy Fawkes masks or hard left activists, they'll be normal everyday folk who see the majority of politicians for what they are, self serving liars.

 

There are legitimate grievances in the world, there are genuine victims of war, oppression and political corruption. The problem with taking your point of view is that these genuine cases get lost in the mire of half baked conspiracy theories and farcical agendas that get wrapped up in "west against the rest" diatribes so beloved of multi-millionaire imbeciles like Russell Brand, David Icke and Michael Moore.

 

You talk about people having 'blind faith' in US/UK/NATO/western foreign policy but you displayed the same kind of unquestioning blind faith in that website Global Research. You posted a link by a Serbian politician who worked for Milosevic when he was carrying out genocide on Muslims in Bosnia as a way to support your argument that NATO is some kind of dark force in the world, you see the irony there?

 

Remember Tom, the world is essentially run by civil servants, government advisors and 100,000s of political lobbying groups each trying to influence the sitting governments. It's not run by the illuminati or the Freemasons, there is no New World Order, humans are too imperfect for that kind of venture to ever be successful.

If I believed that my kids had to go to school to learn how to behave, learn common courtesy, common sense, how to communicate and represent their-selves, to cook, be practical, problem solve and even read and write. I'd feel a failure as a parent, aren't these things that are taught at home?
