Because it’s a Ford! Not a reliable Jap rebadge like the earlier models.

Yet when had a Mazda, the drive shaft fell off on the Edinburgh bypass!

Having said that, we used some 4 x 2.2 engines and a couple of 3.2 units! Both the newer 3.2 have dodgy gearbox faults  too. We go to Isuzu soon.....

Now. Is their a worthy tune for these to pull them up to 200hp?

Should have changed the UJs then! 🤣 No truck is maintenance free. Besides, I’m amazed you didn’t feel / hear the clanging!

At the time, it had had a service not long before, the driver is a time served HGV mechanic and reported no probs. Then bang! I once was half way through a long trip in a Defender 130 and a sudden, massive vibration stopped us. We removed the back shaft, lobbed it in 4H and carried on!

You can do the same with a Ranger. They will still go in front wheel drive in 4H.

I'm not familiar with a defender, but I think you would have had to put it in 'diff lock' to keep going, as they are permanent 4D

I did do the same with my old Ranger/Mazda on the way to the APF many moons ago - had to remove the prop shaft in the motorway services en route as it started shaking like a shitting dog!
