This is the fundamental problem with the SNP / Labour tax the rich policy:

10 drinkers in a bar who decide to settle their £100 weekly beer bill roughly the same way we pay our taxes. So, the first four men (the poorest) paid nothing; the fifth paid £1; the sixth £3; the seventh £7; the eighth £12; the ninth £18; and the 10th man, the richest, paid £59.

Then the barman decided to give them a £20 discount for being good customers. The group wanted to continue to pay the new £80 bill the same way as before. While the first four men still drank for free, the other six divided up the £20 windfall by following the progressive principle of the tax system. So the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing, making a 100 per cent saving; the sixth man paid £2 instead of £3 (a 33 per cent saving); the seventh man paid £5 instead of £7 (a 28 per cent saving); the eighth £9 instead of £12 (a 25 per cent saving); and the ninth £14 instead of £18 (a 22 per cent saving). The 10th man paid £49 instead of £59 (a 16 per cent saving).

The men then began to compare their savings. “I only got £1 out of the £20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the 10th man, “but he got £10 – the wealthy get all the breaks!” “Wait a minute,” said the first four men, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new system exploits the poor.” So the other nine men surrounded the 10th and beat him up. The next week he didn’t show for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when they came to pay, they discovered they didn’t have enough money between them to pay even half the bill.

Say what you like about the Tories, you can't argue with the maths.

:congrats::congrats:

The top 1% wealthiest people in this country pay near one third of all tax!!!

I remember on top gear they were talking about speed cameras being a stealth tax, they revealed that the previous year Simon Cowell had paid more in income tax than had be generated by all the speed cameras in the country!!

IMO, the idea that the rich don't pay the share is utter nonsense.

Unfortunately many of our country men are very sad jealous people, who try to cover up their own failings and weakness by finding fault with those more successful than themselves.

In many countries when a nice car pulls onto a car park, the onlookers congratulate the owner and admire the car, over here they often come out with put downs such "bet he's a drug dealer or a thief", its very sad:thumbdown:

Wouldn't that depend entirely on whether you measure 'failing and weakness' and 'success' by bank balance?

What about contribution to society and the betterment of the nation?

It's ironic that those who loudly rally to the call of patriotism are usually the same that have little or no interest in 'the nation'; welfare/education/health etc.

Individual wealth at the (literal) cost of society (eg tax benefits enabling low wages) is absolutely unpatriotic. With few exceptions big money has exactly the same attitude as dole scroungers; take everything, give nothing.

Ask almost anybody if they could avoid paying tax and they'll say 'yes! of course'! What is a nation without a shared aim and shared benefits? Just a land mass.

This country is far down the road of being millions of suspicious individuals stealing from their neighbours. Those who fought in WW2 and went on to form the welfare state as it stood can't have been aiming for this, surely?

The 'United' Kingdom? More like Untied kingdom.

Of course the top 1% pay nearly a third of all tax! They are the mega rich that are earning millions and millions every year, therefor pay a massive amount of tax.:001_rolleyes:

The hard facts are.. If your in the top 10% of earners you'll pay about 35% of your income in tax, if your in the bottom 10% of earners you pay about 43% of your income in tax, how's that fair?
