In 2010 I completed a Help for Heroes 350mile bike ride through Northern France - we came back across to Dover on HMS Largs Bay before coming ashore on landing craft. We were lucky enough to be treated to an air display by a spitfire whilst standing on the deck of the ship - it's fair to say the pilot got fairly close to us - here's a photo (absolutely unedited)

 

Brilliant pic:thumbup1: imo theres only 2 iconic planes in my lifetime : spitfire & concorde. Ive seen concorde flying but never a spit

started watching fantastic friend does old aircraft up for a living. and has just got his examiner certificate for airworthiness on chipmunks. so he gets to ride in them. but he has done spitfires hurricanes up. clever chap

My old an was in the RAF from 1947 - 1952 before he got invalided out. Remember him telling me a story once. The old way of starting the aircraft manually was to stand and spin the propeller hard and kind of swing your leg out of the way so it didn't hit you. One day a new guy did it and the engine fired. He forgot to swing his leg fast enough and the propeller caught him and sliced a large part off one of his buttocks!

I was lucky enough to have the 2 Lancasters, Spitfire and Hurricane fly over my garden this year on their way to the clacton airshow, a sound and sight I will not forget.

Spitfires are without doubt the most beautiful machine and Merlin's are the sweetest sound ever.

I have huge admiration for the pilots and crew that flew them.

I read somewhere that most spitfire pilots in the battle of Britain were polish, hence the polish war memorial along the A40
