Im not defending absenteeism(my word is my honour)but sometimes these type of threads degenerate into some kind of groundie beating exercise,i swear some of the employers on here treat their workers like some kind of lower caste.I think some of you deserve the crappier staff because of your high and mighty attutudes(im not talking about any one involved in this thread though)

Anyone agree or is it just me?

 

if the guy isn't turning up because of a heavy weekend or a lack of work ethic then this is simply not on and should be gotten rid of. simple as.

 

the reason this subject generates so much annoyance from employers is because they often feel that they are the ones being taken advantage of.

 

they work longer hours than their employees, take the responsibility when employees cause problems, ensure that work is quoted for, booked in arranged. kit is fixed, maintained, bought.

rearrange a jam packed diary when employees call in sick and let good customers down.

 

if an employer texted their guy(s) on a Monday morning saying: 'I'm ill today so jobs cancelled, I wont be paying you, and you'll have to work twice as hard to fit it in on Tuesday, oh and I cant be bothered to go and do those quotes either so there will be some unpaid days off next week too'

 

then the employees work ethic would be unlikely to get a warm reaction.

Regiment Timeings stipulate on time is 10 mins before agreed time.

I sometimes sub into local companies as a groundy. 9/10 I am the first person there, waiting at the yard gate for it to be unlocked.

In my opinion being prompt is one of the most important things. turning up on time in clean and tidy gear.

Hopefully this creates a good impression, and they will use you more- espesially as I leave the other groundies standing!!

I'm not the best time keeper in the world and freely admit it but when I come out and lads are waiting for me after I might have had to find sort a bit of paperwork etc and then start putting boots on going back to there car for bate bag with a ow didn't know what we were doing today I get a bit peeed off.

I cant believe that they always get their mum to phone me the night before or at 7 am to say so and so has got a bad foot,or hasnt come out of his bedroom all weekend,or still stoned,or has fever.

And these are guys in their mid twenties.

Exactly why I loose the plot when it happens when I can't get cover! Booked 6 weeks solid so f**ks everything up.. Luckily today it was trimming and I wrapped it all up by 5. Just got to tip off now.

Glad you got through the day ok, was a bit worried when I read your post 1st thing this morning! Been in the same position myself some yrs ago when running 2 trucks and 2 staff.

 

"We" are talking about young guys having fun on the weekend whilst we are sharpening chains, out quoting for jobs, trying to make sense of double entry book keeping. It's just an age thing I guess, but very annoying for an employer trying to get ahead.
