Its only a matter of time before somebody mentioned the dreaded green oval, but to be honest you are looking at a 110 or 130 to do what you want....thats why they have such a strong relationship with the arb industry i suppose.

I think big J is about 61/2 feet tall he would need to buy a defender double cab and sit in the back like myself :001_smile:

Yeah, Landies aren't really a comfortable option at 6ft 8"!

Sounds daft, but cruise is a necessity for me. Partly because I'm very tall and have a buggered right side of back and right leg, and partly due to the newly installed average speed cameras on the A9. Can't imagine that you can get a 110 with cruise.

A 7.5t lorry is no use to me as it's not sufficiently multi purpose. A vehicle needs to be able to tow heavy trailers, access rough tracks and fields, transport family whereever I need to go and negotiate snow and ice. A lorry only works as a timber delivery tool and nothing more.

On the topic of tachos, beyond the installation of a digital tachograph, what else do I need?

Yeah it wouldnt be the most spacious for a giant of a man like yourself J. You have to sacrifice something somewhere- the best towers out there are the toyotas- the big landcruisers are streets ahead of anything else, but like you say you lose the pick up. LAndies are the ultimate off road but arent necessarily designed for long distance comfort if you are huge, most of the others seem to be made of double sided sticky tape and spit and wishes as opposed to proper engineering lol....TBH though although i have seen alot of rangers absoloutely shagged after very little really hard use (the diffs are total cheese for example) and the older engines were crap after about 80k, I have always maintined that they would be my second choice after a defender. Like someone else said though, all 4x4s have their limits, and are pretty much on a level playing field in the grand scheme of things.

I'd think that the Toyota land cruiser 79 would be a really good seller in this country- particularly now the defender is no longer. It seems to combine the best of all pickups, except fuel and I doubt parts are cheap either.

The rangers seem to have such small pickup beds. Particularly the new 'uprated' one. Not sure what of do in your position, the new pickups all seem far too glamorous to be used for proper work, and more so with each model which comes out, where are all the tough pickups for people who actually want to work them?

Just on your 110 and cruise control, the MOD ones that have been fitted out as radio HQ vehicles have a mechanical advance and retard which you can set from the driving seat. Not meant to be for driving but just for generating more from the alternator.... However they do work as cruise control, not that I've ever done it you understand. Sure one of the big auction places will have one specc'd appropriately and cheaper than normal ones.

Just to caveat this would be unsafe as no electronic or mechanical cut offs, you have to physically release the mechanism.
