is LOLER worth anything?

We all do it.. I hope!

 

Reading the zigzag thread got me thinking....

In all seriousness its a significant expense on the industry, is that expense justified?

 

I have been on Arbtalk for a while and as you will have noticed whenever there's an accident it tends to get posted on here. I can't remember a single one where the kit was to blame, nearly always either climber error.

 

Can anyone point me to an accident where kit failed??

 

I am struggling to see the point in LOLER.

As the gentleman on Axmen, so elequontly expressed it "Ye caint fix stupid".

And the inspection regime is a nonsense since virtually any sign of wear gets kit written off. even though there will be a factor of safety of 5 or 10 in the design and manufacture.

Which should allow for some reasonable wear surely?

But hey to be sure to be very very sure, replace it.

its the way we've slipped into , everything has to be certified , experience seems to count for nothing , your insurance firm loves it , keeps others in jobs .. even experienced people make mistakes but experience usually comes at a cost or pain .You're right most sane people wouldn't climb with sub standard kit but some times short cuts are made especially in hard times .

You have to zoom out a bit Tom

 

LOLER is waaaaay bigger than arb, we are just a tiny speck caught up on the edges of it.

 

LOLER is there (Europe wide) because some people think shoddy kit is OK

I guess it's good for employees with tight employers-a tight employer may tell you to man up and keep using worn out kit, but being condemned by loler would give the employee grounds to want kit replaced

 

Thats about it, gives some protection to employees getting sent out with firms kit, for the rest of us is a money making pile of chit.

I know, it makes sense for a forklift or a mewp where the operator may lack the technical knowledge to properly inspect the machine. But what climber is going to climb on a knackered or broken piece of kit that he is not happy with?

I get that and the fact that employees might get handed duff kit to use but I don't know how you would go about defining who could get a pass

 

I bet the man from VOSA has a laugh when he has to MOT his works van:laugh1:
