I have had same sypmtom on an escort diesel. Find the fuel solenoid on the fuel injection pump. Put a finger on it. Get someone to turn the ignition on and off. i.e oil and battery light position. Dont engage start as the viberations will not be felt.

You should feel a magneticlly activated ping in the unit if it works. Have a look at them on ebay they are generally round cylinders with a wire coming out the top.

A get you home fix is take it out. Remove the plunger and spring. It will start, but only stop buy stalling in a high gear with footbrake firmly applied.

If it has a simple fuel solinoid it could be that. When the bobcat one failed it was on full chat and nearly threw me out the cab.

It's a modern engine with a coded ignition pump. Can't just 'take the solenoid out' without a lot of hassle- that's the point

Try thumping the ignition barrel. If it then starts suspect the key reader that surrounds the ignition barrel- these sometimes need a clean.

If it is modern and has an obd2 port stick it on ids reader. Passive anti theft system will show if this is stopping it.

Probably a bosch vp44 pump, they say you cant remove the immobiliser without a laptop, hah, yes you can. Been there, done that. Had a transit a few years ago where the immobiliser ring on the ignition barrel used to turn itself round, usually a red or blue ring around where you put the key in, try and turn it. If tight probably not that, but you never know.

if the last thing you did was turn it off and get out then the fault is in that point of switching off and getting out so could well be key transponder has already stated maybe try the spare key or take your key into key/locksmith with logbook n i'd and give them the key to see if the chip is,nt corrupt has been known if its ok there chip reader will see the code etc so the key can be copy'd etc if needed otherwise your van wont start

Had a similar thing on an older transit. Arrived at job & parked in customers drive, when it was time to go the engine turned over fine but wouldn't start. After calling out local garage discovered timing belt had snapped. Not sure about newer engines but another possibility.
