Wood burning stove with back boiler

We have a Dunsley Highlander 10CH which is rated to 20kW, with anthracite; we only ever use wood on it. This is our only heating, and we have had it for five years or so.

HOWEVER I do expect to change at some point to a wood pellet stove, as:

1) Although the stoves cost an arm and a leg (£4,500 for the kit, probably couple of K to install), there is an immediate subsidy payment (maybe £1,500) to help, and each year, about 3 x the cost of the year's pellets are paid as an RHI benefit

2) You can load it up with pellets and then set it like an oil boiler to come on and off at set times of the day.

My wife was not able to cope with the wood stove when she got ill, which is why I will go this way. Some time.

We have a Stanley multi-fuel range in the kitchen and a Hunter Herald 14 in the living room these are both plumed into a Dunsley neutraliser in the loft above the kitchen. When we did this we added another hot water tank as have 2 kids that don't know the meaning of a quick shower! The 2 fires are the only source of heating for the house. The system works well although we fact keep the glass clean on the Hunter Herald due to the cold spot caused by the back boiler. This is a small price to pay for a cosy house. We are also going to be fitting a bio-mass boiler to tie into the existing system when we have the extension finished at the end of the year (all going well)

Last year we fitted a Stovax Stockton 16. It heats our large, isolated farm house and does all the hot water as well. We run it into one of the four coils in the thermal store. The plumbing was expensive as we plumbed in the oil boiler into another coil. We use an immersion in the third coil and have not yet fitted a solar thermal system to the fourth coil. We are fully renovated and it keeps the place very cosy. The output is 15kw into the water and 7 into the room. We have not bout any oil since. You will need a serious amount of well seasoned logs, soft or hard wood. Good luck
