Without wanting to digress from the OP, it's illegal to take monies from wages other than tax, NI and authorised repayments. Unless explicitly agreed in contractual form. Loosing equipment may be a disciplinary issue, if explicitly detailed in a contract of employment and/or company handbook.

 

I guess what sets us apart is that, had the saw not turned up, the person responsible would have offered to pay for it before being asked.

Lucky bugger!

 

I've left a saw on site overnight, I put it down to tiredness why it got left. Completely hadn't realised. Was still there the next day luckily the site was away from busier areas so was quiet enough. Was gutted when i had realised!

Lost a 338 once it was assumed to have been stolen and turned up in the wood chip pile 2 months later when it was being pushed up ... Same saw disappeared again a month later never to be seen again.. Only saw ever to have been lost.
