Which Cordless drill?

Didn't know where to put this so thought i'd pop it in the general chat.

I'm after a cordless drill but there seem to be an endless amount off opnes available so was wandering if anyone out there has got any recommendations. Something that would be a good all rounder really, for drilling and screwing index screws in etc..

There are also three different types of drill available: combi drills, drill drivers and impact drivers. Could someone shed some light on what the difference between the three drills are?

Cheers!

Combi is a drill that can be used for drilling, putting in screws and has a hammer action for drilling stone and block.

Impact drivers are ace IMO but only really good for putting in screws.

Drill driver puts in screws and drills.

It's hard to go wrong with Dewalt and Makita but they come at a price. The new lithium iron batteries are great as no problems with battery memory so can be charged any time. Higher Volts normally indicates more power but not a guarantee so look at NM figure for the power and higher AH will last longer between charges.

Just bought a 14.4 v dewalt combi drill and impact driver set from screwfix for 200. The reviews look great and I'm happy so far. I thought 14 volt might be a bit wimpy but its enough for the jobs I need. Its Lithium ion 14.4 v and 1.5ah with two batteries and charger.

Some of the reviews say 1.5ah is not great but you can get after or opt for the beefier 4 for longer life?

The impact driver whips 8inch timber lock? (The hex screws used for decking, sleepers etc not sure of the name) screws out in seconds, something my old bosch 24v struggled with.

Also comes in a proppa mans case :P

Once you've used an impact driver for putting in/taking out screw, you'll wonder how you ever managed without one - leagues apart from a conventional driver but no good for drilling.

Depends hw much you are looking to use it, but I've found the Ryobi 1+ 18V range not bad for the money. Not a professional grade item but they seem to last well with infrequent (though often heavyish) use.

I bought one of these as few months ago Milwaukee 18v Combi Drill Li-Ion Dual Pack Kit (1x 2.0ah & 1x 4.0a..

so far really good! It's taken a fair amount of abuse so far and stood up very well. The brushless motor seems good too.

As others have said Dewalt & Makita are very good, they're expensive, but it's not worth thinking about getting a cheap one because you'll just have to replace it because they just don't last.

So a combi drill is probably the one i want for an all rounder then?

although sometimes it'll be used for taking out pesky screws... which would be better done with an impact driver. lol!

It will only be used occasionally i guess so doesn't have to be top of the range but a good quality one as i want it to last.

Been looking at makita, bosch and dewalt drills hard to tell them apart tbh.

18v lithium Ion, do not abuse the batteries, they die if they get too hot.

P.S. Buy drill driver, then save up for a bare impact driver, uses same battery.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for, I use mine hard every day, and it is lasting well.
