Hauling chip vs round logs

A cubic meter of timber weighs between 1 and 2 tons depending what it is, that will make about twice that volume when chipped. The only wood that will reduce in volume is the lop and top. To shift 6 ton of chip you will need at least a 15 cubic meter trailer

We haul timber then chip on site at our leisure. Problem with chip is keeping it clean and combustion if you have to stockpile. You have neither of these problems if you leave it in sticks.

You can reduce the bulk of lop and top but you are fluffing up cord when its chipped.Our trailer is 60 cubic meters and it feels like its empty when full of chip compared to when its stacked out with rings and chogs.

I agree but it's quicker to tip a load of chips than unload cord. Also no need to strap the load down.

 

Cord is cheaper to dry in stack without contamination.

Its "lop and top", its whats left in the woods when the saw logs and cord have been removed.

Only if you have access to the wood all year round and the chip will not be stored at the boiler site for more than 14 days. Thats assuming your boiler will handle moisture content in excess of 50%
