£700 this works out at £15 per hour

 

Been sweating about it but have just had acceptance of this and they sound quite happy. Pheww

Good for you , I've come to the conclusion that if they don't like the price then tough, I'm not going to give it away. People don't realise what work goes into somethings.

It's especially hard if you think it's expensive. But you know how much time and effort it's taken. And you know if you've cut any corners or delivered a top class product.

Cut it at about 3.5 - 4 mm then planed flat enough to glue and re planned when bonded to ply probably ending up 2mm thick. I like to cut my own as bought stuff is 0.6 mm thick before you have touched it so to fragile for my likeing. I have seen too much repro furniture in homes where the veneer has chipped off exposing MDF. The old veneers where about 3mm thick and it would stand up to century's of use.

"I hate MDF" My mantra but I used to use it before I saw the light. Now put my hand in my pocket and fork out for birch ply.

My whole house is made up from hand made stuff,and not made entirely by me, I appreciate the process in the things that I purchase, some people dont,as when I was 20 I just didnt have the money,whether I appreciated the craftsmanship or not,so the fact Im in a situation to be able to justify buying quality stuff,Id say your box is lovely,and I`d say the client who commissioned you will have a family heirloom,worth every penny,,some people will say £700 Jesus!!,,but could they make it? probably not,nor appreciate the time and skill involved,,but everything is relavant,,,

Deliver the box this afternoon and she looked close to tears when she saw and opened it (don't think it was the bill ) Moments like that make it all worthwhile.

 

She was not remotely surprised by the price as she had allowed for an extra 20%. Turns out that lots of her friends are artists and apparently none of us are any good at pricing our work.
