So things were done a little different, trees were trimmed and felled, I doubt these guys called themselves Arboriculturalists but they were doing the job.

Anyway the point was sitting round in pubs or talking to pedants on forums things were always "better in the old days no money left in the game!" or "too many youngsters ruining it for us pros" etc

So true Huck . I can remember my father telling me about a local tree guy circa 1975 cutting limbs off a tree near our house with a bow saw . The local panda car stopped and assisted in traffic control . They ended up using golf course putting green flags to control the traffic . I bet some of the lads on here don't even know what a panda car is

Jesus Matthew, you must be as old as me!

Arb, as we know it, is a pretty recent invention, and the amount of ex-forces lads, college leavers and gardeners wanting to enter the industry is at an all time high.

Who can blame them? We all wanted to do it.

The sad truth is many more will fall by the wayside rather than forge a successful career in the tree game.

The training providers and equipment suppliers will benefit along the way, and again, who can blame them? It's business.

Charge what you're worth for decent clients, forget the cheapest quote brigade.

Not always easy with mortgage and kids etc. though.

I almost never win work on price, in fact I actively avoid quoting for work where its three quotes and the cheapest price gets it, because its a waste of my time. If you feel you have to quote low to get the work, you are quoting for the wrong clients, look for some better ones.

My man day rate is nearer what most people on this thread are quoting for a 2 man team, but my setup relies on machines rather than cheap labour so its not really a fair comparison.

May I ask how do you know how many quotes the client is getting?

Do you ask before hand or what...?

Regards
