Good job he moved and did not try to keep cutting

At least he knew it was a barber and I bet he was glad it snapped off and did not end up having to deal with it with the top hanging on.

Fair play for going back in and carrying on I think I would of taken a few mins out.Nice one pete for finding a decent example.

This looks nasty

That is a good example.

Glad to have mentioned it hear having receive positive feed back and to see others learning about them. Good to hear different techniques as well.

Some say keep cutting, in he-insight yes, cutting more would reduce the likelihood of it happening but its to a situation where the tree is going to just start to fall, not going to go unless you stop and give it push. Your going to want to try and keep a little there so if it rests back its not going to snap the hinge.

A small letter box cut, coming from the gob at the same height or just above where your back cut is going to be would be a pretty good way to reduce the chance.

Also if its a real strait tree, do enough of the back cut to give some space to smash a wedge in. Then you will just be able to keep cutting longer as it starts to go.

Danish is actually on the syllabus if you do a felling course now.

I know what you mean about just keep cutting but in reality what's its going you should have made all the cuts you intend to do and get out of the way.

Thoughts?

I think it comes down to assessing each tree as you come to it. Yes, in an ideal world everything would be by the book but it doesn't seem to work like that. A calculated risk based on common sense and experience.
