A lot of people fall into the once bitten twice shy trap. Its worth persevering.

 

Try Highland Park, which comes from orkney, its peaty but has a nice sweet note too from the sherry casks, a little like Jura which is more peaty, Lagavulin is very peaty, although the Lagavulin "quarter cask" is a bit more mellow if you can find it. all the above are reasonably priced....

I'm no expert but Bowmore's one with the tcp aroma and not too pricey, i think it something to do with coming from Islay and the peaty soil

 

The peat and smoke comes from the drying of the malted grains, so in the Highland and Islands a more peaty tradition, but anywhere wood grows a more woody smoke.
