Forget Ford or Massey- too many anorak collectors pushing up prices.

£2k buys you:

a. A Massey Ferguson 35x / Ford 3000 in average condition, no cab, single speed PTO, basic hydraulics (not spooled), no power steering etc, three gears, 1 reverse, no loader

or b. An International 454 with a power loader, power steering, cab (may be rotten though!) 4 speed shuttle gearbox (4 high, 4 low, 4 reverse) 2 speed PTO, proper hydraulic spool valve (independant of linkage) hydraulic brakes.

No brainer. David Brown are also value for money.

We have an International 454 and it's a brilliant wee tractor. Great gearbox and plenty of power for its size and only cost £1500. Spends most of its time between the circular saw or log splitter. Highly recommend one. As said previously said ford, mf, etc prices are high due to collectors

Only point I would make is that the 3 cylinder German Manheilm (sp?) engine fitted to lots of them (mine included) whilst a brilliant performer, can only be reground by a couple of thou, and only once. Therefore clean engine oil is an abosolute must. I do oil and filter every 200 hours, costs only a few beers.

Paid 3750 for my shed of a MF550 to replace my Jinma 204 which died after 6000 hours. Was in two minds whether to get another new 2 cyl direct Jinma import for similar money but decided could not wait 3 months for delivery so ended up with MF. Biggest error I have ever made the MF cannot do a quarter of what the Jinma used to do and is now just a static engine driving my Palax. Would have been cheaper to convert the Palax to electric.
