There are so many factors as covered in pricing thus far

Just price with what you are happy with and don't worry

about what other people charge , you know your overheads

and experience

As Andy pointed out kit is a big part eg I can move 10t in one hit

so if quoting on a large takedown I am more competitive on price

Than some one with a pick up/ tipper but that's not cause I've undercutt

and being sneaky its just less time and motion on job.

I will be honest and straight with customer and charge a fair price and if I don't get it at that ( very rarely) It wasn't meant to be, the haggling customer who wants everything for nowt in my experience is a customer I frankly really don't want.

We will never compete with the fly tippers etc but you can be sure that once bitten the customer will look for a more professional out fit next time and makes the proffessional more appreciated in the long run.

You where happy with your job so was the customer you took your time and and pride , good on you and as you progress you will become more efficient and in turn earn more.

Sounds like the beginnings of a professional to me

Theres a lot of assumptions throughout this thread that people undercutting are less professional and wont offer the same level of service...I think this is a completely false assumption.

The arborist community in my experience is largely made up of practical minded folk who are passionate about their trade and enjoy working hard and doing a good job. Due to their nature it also follows that for the most part they are not business minded people, hence the unrealistic prices they are prepared to work for. I've seen work carried out by companies charging a proper figure, using all the big kit, and carried out to no higher standard that what a small 2 man band with minimum kit would do. On the flip side these 'cowboys' that people refer to undercutting, are likely the ones who are going to rip customers off and do a sub standard job.

In my opinion the issue that needs addressing is one of business education. A lot of people seem to take it awful personal when they are 'undercut', when in reality I doubt their opposition knows or cares what the other quotes were, but are simply pricing the job unrealistically through their own ignorance and lack of a sustainable business model.

How do you know this????

Were their caravans on the lawn???:confused1:

Don't be awkward Huck. There's millions of gypos in this area, I see them every day so I know how to recognise them.

Large Conifer dismantle, jeans and chainsaw boots at the top of a ladder using a new ground saw above his head. Wearing a harness but not tied in. Gang of five with one hard hat. Two professionally sign written transits advertising different tree surgeons.

Getting the picture??

i have found in my area (north east) the travelers knock doors talking people into work they did'nt now they wanted doing so the effect on professional business is minimal(as in not taking jobs the effect on the industry could be worse) , got to agree with steve bullman 100% it is new people starting up they keep there prices low to get work
