Now and again you come across a customer who you cannot please no matter how hard you try!!! :001_rolleyes:

But youre probably just too expensive, driving around in youre new motor!!

Don't worry about it.

You know what a fair rate is for a good days work.

We sometimes get the East enders 'How much?' response.

I politely explain thats my going rate, I get 70% of jobs I quote for so I know it's right.

If they can get someone to do it for less then go ahead with my blessing, in the mean time I've got loads of work to do at the rates I charge so I will not work for less.

 

Last week a bloke said he thought my quote was twice what it should be, so I asked him on what he based that statement. His reply...

'The surveyor who said the trees have to go said it should be £450.'

I smiled, thanked him and left.

If they are like that when you are discussing price what will they be like at invoice time?

 

Moral of the tale - concentrate on customers who will make you fair money and don't take the timewasters personally.

I think investment in a decent vehicle shows you are serious about your business.

 

Who wants to work for the 'cheapest quote out of 15 on a £300 job wins' brigade anyway?

 

I don't charge any more to customers who have big houses and nice cars.

We can fly over those skinflints house whilst puffing on huge cigars, swigging Bolly and pulling moonies at them.:thumbup:

It's the British retarded mentality. In the uk the client wants to use a consummate professional but needs to see us cycling on a rusty bike in order to feel superior and higher up the social ladder than we are, cos we work outside and get grubby.

 

A good comparison is America. Now, we all know the Yanks is dumb with most stuff but they are smart enough to see a guy in a huge shiny truck and say, "that's expensive, he must be good to be able to afford that, I wanna use him!".

 

Apologies to my US counterparts. We actually know you're good at some stuff like: making guns, building chippers, Jennifer Aniston, making the Easy Lift Harness. :thumbup::lol:

You are correct about the folks here in the States as well, I had a customer who was disappointed that when I showed up with my Brand new Woods ZTR machine it only took me 1/2 the time to do his lawn then before?, he than proceeded to say with a dead pan face that he felt he should get a discount on his monthly service for maintenance services rendered!!. Mind you that was a year round account. I explained why he would not be getting a discount and he accepted my story:001_huh:. Thanks for the good stuff made over here esp. them Easy-Lift Harnesses:thumbup1:

You can't win every job. If you do then you are too cheap.

 

Its hard not to take these things personally, but try! Because the way to running a successful business is to harden your heart and let 20 - 30% of your quotes get rejected.:001_smile:

Just one of those things if you have a decent motor your charging too much if you have a pile of crap your not professional you can't win. There will always be someone who can do it cheaper. Your costing is what it is regardless. And they would have probably ended up a pain in the arse!
