I was in Caithness last week; heard one in the Flow Country at Forsinard, then the next day saw and heard three of them - often squabbling - 15mins down the A99 from Wick in country similar to the Flow but more undulating.

Sorry to be a Johnny two shits @Billhook but it's the truth, honest

No shits on here, we are all bird lovers!

OK sorry no photo, but yesterday I heard a Cuckoo for the first time for years here on the East Coast of Lincolnshire. Bit late, but how does that old country rhyme go

The Cuckoo comes in April, in May it sings all day.

In mid June it changes tune, July it flies away

I can only remember the last two lines of the rhyme my mother used to say about them

...come July away I fly

August away I must

Saw a small flock of lapwings today in Northumberland

should they not be busy rearing chicks in pairs now ?

could they be fledged chicks already?

david

Some of the early breeders have now fully fledged young, while I've seen some still sitting which maybe on their 2nd attempt. Noticed a bit of Lapwing movement last week when I was in Galloway.

I've just seen a Magpie attacking a Blackbird, it was pretty brutal. It was part of a gang of three, the other two were standing around close by. Vicious thugs. There were also a couple of other blackbirds at the scene, doing a lot of shouting but not much else.

The blackbird survived, but looks badly wounded, some kind of wing damage. I intervened so that probably saved it, though it's probably doomed anyway now. It looks like a juvenile but fully grown female. So too big for the magpies to eat so I'm wondering what the motivation was.
