Garden, Thank you very much for your help advice and assistance. If i had seen your reply earlier you could have ordered me a kit too! Oh well never mind i will try and find a source near me. I will search the web later for ultrasonic cleaner fluid recepies.

Still reeling from a seized crank bearing on an atlas copco TT breaker yesterday. Only big end bearing is shot but since its all one unit ( like a TS400) i am looking at a whopping £414 plus vat!! I Think i shall go and purchase breakfast to distract my Thoughts! Cheers again Tony

I know what you mean Rich. I get more trouble with Honda carbs than any other, and they are the very worse to get off, especially on the GCV engines.

Getting them back on is a right fiddle, but the use of two steel guide bars makes it much simpler. Next time I do one I will take some pics and post, they may help someone.

I had a Honda carb on and off 3 times today for cleaning after stale fuel, but could not get it to stop hunting, whacked a new carb on in the end, perfect.

On to next job, 17" cylinder mower for full service and regrind.

Yup. I know what you mean. If I can't cure it in 15 mins then it's a new carb, no questions. Cost of brand new carb: £35. One hours labour fiddling with a faulty one: £40. Just doesn't stack up for me or the customer plus the customer and I have the re-assurance that at least with a new carb you know where your are and you're not likely to get a freshly fettled with old carb back in again in a couple of weeks time with the same fault.

Do it with all machinery now. Far better from our service and reputaion point of view to fit a new unit than attempt to repair old. Saws, brushcutters, mowers etc. The price of carbs compared to labour is a lot closer than it used to be.

Bury, a carb cleaning kit is available from Honda under part number 07JPZ-001-0003, priced at a whopping £32.90 plus vat. I have a little box with various diameter picks made from the straight bits of tension springs such as governor springs. It works.

But this question has prompted me to order the Honda kit, which I have just done.

As per Ultrasonic fluid, I use a brand name one from Ultrawave. You need a solution that is PH weak so as not to etch the aluminium. Hard metals use a high PH one.

You can make your own, search google for recipies as I dont feel qualified to advise.

Hope this helps.

this is the ultrasonic fluid we have been useing for over 5 years no problems

Got an MS341 which pops through the carb on warm starts. It pops but still fires. Hoping it isnt going to cause any damage to the seals inside in the carb.

Personally have only had a couple of saws backfire...loudly and were down to sheared flywheel keys.

Would imagine any pop through the carb would just evacuate in to the air filter using the path of least resistance thtough the bore of the carb - strange one as the inlet port will be covered during compression and ignition:confused1:

It sounds like someone letting off a firing cap and you can see vapour/smoke coming out of the air filter. Am i right in thinkg the fuel air mix is combusting under the pressure of being turned over and just causing it to blow out both through the exhaust and air filter?

I forced a couple of hours away from customers machines today in order to prepare a couple of secondhand units for sale. Neither had been used for about a year, so the fuel had turned bad, but after a little work I now have a very nice Victa and a Honda 475 ready for sale in the shop.

I must now recharge the camera so I can take some pics for my website.
