I think that some of the loss of Hedgehogs is down to the number of game birds that are released on commercial shoots ( saying this as an ex game keeper ) . pheasants eat what Hedgehogs do so there is less food for them . Badgers also predate them . 

Agree on the badger front. Been up here in Moray for 12 years and only seen one hedgehog when we first arrived. Badgers everywhere and no hedgehogs at all around here. Also they’re a nightmare on the roads.

That’s really unusual seeing them in a group. Usually pretty solitary unless looking for a shag. Only time I’ve seen such a grouping was a mother with young.

I wouldn't say nasty, surprising large for a UK spider and when you shine a torch on some with several orbs hanging down a bit spooky. Not a spider I'd pick up with my bare hands though.

 

I mostly worry I'll hurt them so take care to replace the manhole covers they tend to live under.

Who lives here ? Appeared on a woodland path over the last few weeks where I walk the dogs each day. Hole goes pretty much straight down.
