Yes we ( kids 60 odd years ago ) used to catch them and some times they would " shoot " their tails . They grow back its their escape strategy . The legless lizard . As you say lovely creatures .

I can’t see any way they won’t eat the newly hatched cygnets at the very least.

There was also a Field Mouse (I think) that was trying to pull a banana skin under a stack of hardwood but too elusive for a pic.
