as the others mentioned take your time try and do things in slow motion.

don't let the saw go all over the place you must control the saw not the saw control you.

if you are using a stick in the sink cut to help achieve a parallel hinge make sure its a straight one. if you are not sure ask your instructor how its done.

don't fell to high, the lower you fell the safer the fell will be.

when i instruct candidates with no experience the easier it is.

experienced candidates can have some bad habits.

Take your time you'll be fine. :001_smile:

Just take your time and listen if not sure ask, even if you only fell one tree in the day and that goes well. If your saw gets trapped or the tree goes the wrong way ask the instructor to explain why, get him to watch you and tell you what your doing wrong if anything.

Don't let anyone rush you speed comes with time.

You'll be fine just relax and enjoy what your doing :001_smile:

Do you have your own saw?

If so get used to the balance of it when performing your bottom cut and back cut. That, ime is where bad cuts go bad, ie not horizontal and cutting down or up at an angle.

Slide your left hand around the handle until it sits level and get a feel for it, then in the corner to get the angle for the top cut, nice and easy to do back home.

good luck with your assesment.

as others have said just take your time and make sure the assesor relises you are being carfull, methodical etc.

i think having little or no experience can help as in you dont have bad habbits and you do what the instructor say as you know no different.

somtimes even if you cock it up a bit you can explain you way to a pass.

one last thing dont get the hung up tree too hung up so when you do the rolling out with the bar it comes out easy rather than 10min wrestlin match.

gd luck,

carl

..it's not about passing..it's about doing things right..

That's the right attitude. So many pass this and still have no idea how to fell a tree.

It's not an easy course to pass with no experience. Me and a friend of mine both failed on the first attempt. Didn't retake it until 5 years later, then I breezed it. Good felling takes a lot of practice.

Don't worry. It's not the end of the world if you join the firsttimefailgroup. I'm sure that there is someone on here with access to a small wood where you could get some more practice in.

I alway try to do a perfect directional cut on every fell but in my experience the size and level of the gob is less important than keeping an adaquate hinge and putting in a good back cut. The twig thing is a good tip - I sometimes still do that myself. If you have room, put a wedge in the back cut as soon as you can - that will stop it sitting back on your saw.

Stay calm - you will be fine.
