Dogs - how do you make it work?

I think now I should give advice to the person who start topic ,cause we all just arguing without of good result for him, and there is my best : don’t get dog now ,wait for a year investigate, observe ask other people (not fanatics like me who will exchange child for four legged friend without blinking or people who carry a dog to the tree to have good time😝) normal people, think why you want a dog in practical point , dog is minimum 10 years of  your live it’s like have 3 year old toddler for 10 years or more , they all different you can get unlucky and you will get untrainable or absolutely crazy one , or with illness ( very common in pure breeds) and keep in mind insurances not covering genetic conditions ,or common problems in old dogs ,then dogs can get dementia ,imagine 50 kg dog in that condition I seen it, vets are very expensive be ready for shock and many of them just bad, I can go on so think well , I still  think fostering is a good way to figure out are you a dog person or are you just dreaming!

I would agree with the above.

I grew up with dogs.  Wanted one for most of my adult life.  20 years living in London I said ‘not yet’.

Moved to Norway in 2017.  Decided to get a dog.  We were renting, ‘not yet’.  Bought a house that needed a bit of work ‘not yet’, wait till the building work is complete.

Researched the breed and met a few of them in the last few years then finally got hold of a decent breeder, not a puppy mill.  Took another 2 years for the pups to arrive.

It was the right time for me/us.  Pretty stable home environment and a good area to be.  Local access to woods and hiking area (hunting during the season) and a family that love the out doors.

Soon there will be snow.  That is when my dog comes alive.

It takes a bit of restraint to say no when you want a dog but if you are the responsible owner that you think you are, you will know when the time is right.

Does your wife carry a taser when out with you, Svat? Not for her protection but to drag you away from an argument you’ve started with someone standing in a bus queue.

After now 6 years living in Ireland, the snow of the Alps is one of the biggest things I miss, but Baldric misses it more than me. I hope he gets at least one more good snowfall before he turns up his toes.

Regarding leads... another thing I miss about France, which annoys me here in Ireland, is that they are seen as an alternative to training and socialisation. They aren't allowed to stop for a sniff, they are just dragged on. What kind of life is that.

I find certain less sensible  dogs loose on  the work site stressful.

Machinary driving about and trees felling and some guys dawg running about nearby etc... no always a good combination

I know many are actually very sensible  and ok & have  more sense than some humans.

But some owners who think there dog are fine as they have being doing that for yrs when im thinking that dogs gonna cop it any minute.....

Local farmer ran over & killed his own sheep dog  on  a quad.....im sure its pretty common......

Hi all,

I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a dog. Me and the better half are both on board, but we aren’t sure about leaving the dog at home during the day. We both work…

Does everyone here take their canines to jobs with them, or have someone at home? Or are we best off forking out for a dog walker every day?

Any dog pictures appreciated!

Down to one dash hound now, could never get out of the yard without them.Thought they had gone off hunting one day so set off on my travels, checked my mirror as I got onto the main road and the sods were chasing me down the road..

Local lad here had his terrier jump out the back window. Straight through the flail.

Thats sad.

I have always been able to leave the truck wide open and leave mine alone in the woods for hours on end, they would go off but always have been within calling distance. They were partial to a dip in my lunch box if I forgot to put the lid on properly.

I’ve just decided to remove the cage and fashioned something similar, but with more space in the work truck.

This week she will be with me most days as the missus is busy.

Tried it for size but she seemed a bit apprehensive.  It also means I have more space for kit when she isn’t with me instead of the big old cage in there.
