Lorry loads of timber for firewood

On a lorry load of hardwood at 75-90 GBP a ton delivered (what my boss is offering me) how many IBC crates would this normally fill?

 

This is me thinking of the future and seeing what you guys think. Will need to find a yard of some sort which I'm also unsure on the price per month of something like that. 

To answer your question about how many IBC cages it will fill - not as many as you would like.  Probably 35.  There is another thread on here where this is discussed in detail.

 

 So if you ignore the cost of processing, each cage will cost you £70 or so in unseasoned logs.  Factor in processing, drying and delivering and it is no wonder that so many firewood sellers simply buy it from abroad.

Even more so when you start screwing up arrangements with your main trading partners.

A 25 ton lorry of fresh hardwood should average around 45 cube. You'll be lucky to get it at less than £90 a ton at the moment so if you're offered tidy stuff at less it's a good deal.

What can you sell for? Price of firewood has gone up, now seems 120 a cube round here but if it hasn't gone up as much you're getting squeezed on costs.

Believe me, I’ve been there. unless you are big time or processing arb arisings it’s a lot of work for small profit. Much easier ways to make a living.

With those sort of small quantities you’ll probably see more profit in doing log nets

And don't forget if you're selling in less than 2 cube amounts you need to be registered with Woodsure which is likely to wipe out most of your profit. I'm not saying you can't sell without it, like many small producers do, but if someone grasses you up you may get fined or forced to pay up.

 

(On that note, does anyone know of any woodsure fines yet?)

Woodsure don't fine, it's the local council, technically I think it's trading standards.

 

But nobody has as far as I'm aware, similar numbers to dog fouling and smoke control.

Have you got somewhere covered to work? Could be a way to be productive on days otherwise cancelled due to weather, that way you're earning a lot more than nothing.
