Of course if you have contracts that require random Drug and Alcohol tests then that is a necessity.  Most companies don’t have those obligations…

Most of the UK infrastructure companies have contracts that specify a no drink or drugs policy (whether this is to all and for small contracts such as arb work I don't know) - that is highways and railways, as do companies such as national grid, water companies and so on... which if you know you have employees or contractors who are users this would limit the work you can go after. As I said though, I don't know if they will go this far for small contracts to small firms... but worth reading the small print.. and if any of their contract managers were reading his thread the thought might be going through their minds now that they know "50%" are on drugs!

I suppose as long as he’s not racking up lines on the truck dash then going out and smashing bits of tree through the roof and groundies heads there has got to be some give … not really on though bringing your gear on to your sites… even worse not not sharing it with the rest of the crew though.

Rails, Electric, highways and waterway is a far from the whole of the Arb industry in the UK.

I have never worked for or had the desire to work for a contractor that works purely in the above sectors.  I am well aware that they have random testing and quite rightly so.

There are a lot of other Arb companies in the UK who don’t do that work.

Imagine what would happen if your subbie or employee whom you suspect to be a user is the cause of a fatal in or life-changing incident and it can subsequently be proven that you knew or suspected he was a user and did nothing.

I'm pretty sure that your life would take a significant turn for the worse. Is it worth the risk?

If the only way you can stay in business is by employing users then you really shouldn't be in business unless you find a way to manage the risk.

Just this, if there's an accident on site and you were found to know about said druggie but did nothing, I'd imagine you'd have the book thrown at you?

Employee fulfilled his responsibility by telling you, at the moment its with you until you can prove you acted on it.

any others?

I'd be keen to see red bull type assistance on your list as well. One minute running around like a bull in a china shop then crash, as thick as mince and whinging for 'lunch' which will invariably be a chocolate bar.

I'd rather rely on the guy that had a few joints, a good night's sleep then breakfast before getting on site.
