Saw Choice - Tricky

If you want to kick arse, the 500i. If you don’t need the absolute best power:weight you can get and would rather have the slightly more maintainable carb for the long term serviceability, the 461. That said, how often do injectors go wrong in all the modern things they’re in. My 500i had a new one not long after I got it and the risk of repeat failure doesn’t worry me now (and I’m the sort of person who worries about stuff like that). The price difference really does make your choice hard because a 25” on a 500i really does sing.

The 461 is a hateful, heavy, unbalanced barstard of a saw! It will cut hard all day long but give me anything over a 461! The 500 is a nice saw to use but more expensive to run.
my 46 sits it the shed most of the time. I go from 550xp to 661 the 461 can rot for all I care!!!

Yes the 500i has fantastic power to weight ratio, but not being able to work on the carb, price (new or used) and being too close to bigger saws holds me back.  A 46 something is fine if you have other saws, I'd only consider a 550i if I had fewer options.

It's damn near impossible to work on those 500i carbs...

Look, not everyone can be as super manly and macho as us. In a world of political correctness, gender fluidity and total bleeding heart equality there's a big market for   M̶y̶ ̶F̶i̶r̶s̶t̶ ̶C̶h̶a̶i̶n̶s̶a̶w̶ Stihls.
