It was a bold fell considering the targets.

Pure speculation of course, but I’m guessing that the faller was standing the other side to the direction of the fall, and cut through the hinge. Lot of buttress roots on a lombardy. 
Can result in a tendancy to be unaware of where the end of the bar is.

Lots to go wrong with felling Lombardy, specially if theres any decay.

 

good point about using the buttress roots, but you know as well as I do 90% of tree surgeons don’t know how to fell properly

True , if your ever winching or pulling over a tree you have to be pulling directly infront of the back lean and weight, a lot of folk think you can come from the side and pull it in to a gap .. even with a decent hinge it will still go with the weight most of the time.

Yeah and never rely on Poplar hinge wood.

Very lucky - everybody’s had one or two that just gets away from them, but looks cavalier at best judging from the space available.  When I was starting out you’d send a young’un, (usually me), into the road to stop the traffic.
