Anyone who has never done a job for cash at some point is in self denial. I have even done work for 2 retired tax inspectors and they are the worse.

I have found that it's really only the over 60s with a mortgage free house and tidy pension that still ask the cash question and anyone else is just happy to pay in full by bank transfer. 

 

They don't want to pay the VAT but more then happy to use all the services that it provides.

If someone wants to pay by cash or cheque I just tell them that I'll need to add £192 to the bill to cover the time to go to the bank. Soon gets them asking for bank details.

I just say sorry but we have to bank the cash anyway if anyone asks. I would always choose cash, or cheque, over bank transfer but it does mean you get more people trying to negotiate.

Why 192?  Just a random figure to persuade them or is there a reason?

That does seem a bit random doesn't it. My hourly rate is 160 quid ( actually. I charge 80 per 30 mins, but you get the idea) + VAT, so 192 quid to spend an hour popping to the bank.
