I used to carry out emission tests on plant for some customers. The emissions from red diesel were much higher than the same engines running "white" derv because red lacks the additives and burns less cleanly.

I new a bloke who had a boat with a dummy tank that held a small amount of " white "  ( for if he got dipped ) and out of site the main tank for cherry .

Out of interest was that when red was gas oil or more recently when it was low sulphur diesel dyed red ?

People using narrow boats do they have to use white diesel ? Just googled it

Can red diesel be used in boats?
Red diesel continues to be available at the waterside but recreational boaters must pay the full rate of duty when purchasing fuel for the purposes of propulsion. Red diesel used for domestic purposes such as heating or electricity generation, may be purchased at the reduced rate of duty.

Red diesel in narrow boats is staying after all ☺️ . You fill up with red and make a declaration on the non propulsion ..... they suggest 40% and you pay duty at 60% of the road fuel rate

I was always under the assumption that any fuel used for propulsion which was travel based i.e. Not moving a digger round a building site but moving the digger to the site, should be white diesel. If a narrow boat has only one tank it should be filled with white. If it had a seperate tank for heating then that could be red.

Good point. This was was gas oil but I believe the non taxed low sulphur diesel is unlikely to have a full compliment of additives due to cost.

I visited an independent suppliers tank farm recently and the forecourt customer  specified additive package is put into the road tanker with the fuel prior to final delivery.

No it shouldn't be white for propulsion of a narrowboat, if it was how would people people get white to the boat?
