I'm not at all familiar with small saws, always been 18in or more since I were a lad.

That might be up to you or what saw comes with, coppice cutting wants a faster chain speed, so thats bigger drive sprocket n shorter bar. I would choose yr saw then get the bar swapped. Agree with you on  Stihl, over priced. Husqy 435 would be good. Simple saw. Makita also or Echo. In the same engine size. K

You don't say what you're coppicing?

 

I'm a smallholder for want of a better description, with several acres of woodland. I have a few acres of mixed broadleaves that was planted about 30 years ago and I'm thinning and coppicing it. I have a Still 120 CBQ battery saw, a Stihl 170 and an Echo 352ES.

 

The 120 is great for use on the odd job and for coppicing hazel but not for thinning say ash. The Stihl 170 was bought as a cheap backup saw and is ok, but struggles a bit on stumps and can be a bit troublesome.

 

The Echo 352 has been faultless and copes fine for my needs. I've had if for 5 years and I also deal with larger trees and that runs fine with the 14" bar buried in ash. It's obviously not the fastest saw or the same as a 50cc pro saw but fine for me. It's also frugal and very easy to start.

 

However, the dealerships haven't been good and if you want to make use of the 5 year domestic guarantee it'll need a service which can cost a bit. I'm not keen on the VXL chain for coppicing work either, I'm currently running the PX chain and think it's better.

Second hand Husqvarna 346xp or new from some EU websites (France). Non auto tune, 13” narrow kerf bar, job done.

I know you said you don't like Stihl..., but I would probably favour a back handled Ms200 for coppicing.

Powerful saw. Will run a 12, 14" bar all day long.

The Stihl MS241 on a picco chain is perfect power to weight ratio for coppicing- it weighs near on the same as the MS181 but far more power. However, I've had two and they both ate the drive shaft. Gone over to Echo (CS501SX) and I really rate it. I'd have a look at their range if I were you.

It makes a lot of sense, low weight, decent power, rated by many. My go to is the 346XP but they are hard to find and heavier although light compared to a 266!
