Knot for heavy Winching

What’s the best knot to connect a rope to a winch cable when winching weighty lumps or something that will take a lot of winching ?

 

Been using a bowline on a bight but had it completely Jam up whilst using a 7.5 ton winch which was on a Mog. I wasn’t the one that was operating the winch and I do wonder whether it was pushed hard (pulling lumps of poplar up a steep bank river bank using a high re direct).

I use the loop of a carters hitch with a twig to keep it in place.

That's time to use chain or wire strips. Rope although possibly strong enough will be damaged at the knots & suffer abrasion as it is skidded up the bankside.

Are you using a rope so you can shorten it many time on multiple pulls. Standard Bowline should work and you will get it undone all i ever use when i need to shorten rope to winch stuff near.

I find a sheep shank quicker, still with a twig. Trouble with knots like this is they considerably reduce the breaking strain of the rope  so many turns round a fixed bollard is safer.

a sheep shank is for shorting a rope use a timber hitch or a round turn and two half hitches
