balk
noun [ C ]
 (UK also baulk)

UK

 /bɔːk/ US

 /bɑːlk/

balk noun [C] (WOOD)

a rough, thick piece of wood

12x12x12= 1728 cubic inches per foot

(39x12)+6 = 468 inches long

((12x3)+7)squared = 1849 square inches in cross section,

so volume  = 468x1849=865,332 cubic inches = 865,332/1728 = 500.77 cubic feet

without a calculator, wearing a few old rags and malnourished would have been fun

Actually I am not giving you full marks as you have not completed the question.  How much is it worth at two shillings and sixpence a cubic foot.  As a punishment you can convert it into today's value.

As another punishment you can give me an example of a noun in the nominative case being absolute!

My daughter is in Welsh medium stream (age ? in a small Carmarthenshire village school of around 50 pupils and in some subjects I think she is excelling but others...not so much. Writing is pretty abysmal and I guess that comes from the general attitude 'why do you need to wite anything?' . I don't agree. Tables and Welsh language she is pretty much in the top 2-3 in her class but English has only been introduced to her in Sept '19 but she is doing well but I would estimate 1 year behind me at the same age. Months of the year - she doesn't know (home schooling job for today!). Good on Minecraft and Roblox though ;)

Yeah my two are in a Welsh school also, and my 7 year old has not even started English yet.  Luckily it is not a problem for our two as they read loads.  But yes the Welsh school is really good at teaching Welsh (and in this area most of the kids are not in Welsh speaking families of course) but I am realising everything else is maybe not so hot!

And yes, there is no emphasis on writing at all.  I feel neat writing is a basic skill you can give kids which is never going to do them any harm, and may even lead to many other skills, and greater motor control which could possibly mean they are better equipped for some highly skilled jobs like surgeon, artist, sculptor sportsperson, etc, etc.

Private schools still place massive emphasis on writing, and hey guess what?  Half the UK medal winners from the 2012 Olympics went to private school.

I remember having to buy a special Birol pen with an Italic nib.

We has to learn to write italics correctly and were marked down if a tick was in the wrong place or a fat bit was done on the wrong angle and looked thin.

This was’t just a specialist class, they introduced it to us and after a week or so every piece of written work had to be in Italics.

This was 1st and 2nd year juniors.  I was 7/8 years old and it was the early 80’s.

Both my kids have found the home schooling pretty boring.  We moved from a really good OFFSTED school in south London to Norway in 2017.

If you think the level of schooling is bad in the UK.  Norwegian Kids don’t start school til they are 7 or 8.  Then they learn the letters, numbers and to put a small dot at the end of a sentence, just like this .

My youngest was already doing multiplication, division, additions and subtraction and writing a paragraph how he had worked it out.

My oldest boy, last year, entered a maths competition for the year group higher than him.  He got the highest marks available.  His problem is he finds it so easy and rushes through stuff so he can go out skating or Thai Boxing, he is starting to make silly errors.

That is our focus at the moment.

I've already had enough punishment for not studying hard enough thanks - a lifetime of donkey work. Working in great big gardens for rich people and always thinking if only I'd tried harder at school. Still, lots of rich businessmen have died in helicopter crashes...

Totally agree Squaredy.

Neither myself or the other half speak Welsh (well she can as nec for dealing some elderly NHS patients) so English is the std in our house. We made the decision early on that she will be coming out of Welsh stream when she transfers to senior school. Local ed do not approve and will no doubt do all they can to hinder us but hey ho. My daughter has spoken Welsh since 3 years old so has reached a good level of fluency. Her spoken English is, of course, spot on but her reading and writing ability is poor compared to myself at that age.

I checked after your previous post and she also doesn't know the months of the year in English so that was yesterdays sideline task. Both my partner and I are not furlowed, so still working full time and juggling child 'entertainment'. Minecraft it is then!

I still remember caligraphy/handwriting lessons used an ink pen and a pot of ink on every table around the age of 9-10 (1977?).

We have also just found out after repeated statements via email that my daughter does actually have homework to do while in lockdown. Her teacher had claimed it was being issued but never told anyone exactly 'where'. We had been checking the Hwb (Welsh thing) daily and nothing was appearing in the 'Homework' folder. Turns out they have been putting it in 'Attached files'. Numbnuts!

Yeah we have had a nightmare with Hwb, finally got the hang of it, but so many conflicting instructions have been given it has been a pain.  So now my wife uses it (and Twinkl which is much easier) and I just make up stuff that I know will be valuable and appropriate for them.

In Dad Home School they have baked a cake, studied and written about Tyrannosaurus Rex (the 7 year old), the American Civil War (9 year old), done Uke lessons, researched how to play Chess, learned how to use a traditional encyclopedia, and much more.  Much of the focus will be on writing over the coming weeks sadly for them!
