We got a lift in a rather nice MB Vario based people carrier. The driver was driving well sharpish. I asked him about the lower van speed limit. He said the cameras only triggered at car limit speeds. Ergo he was all right.

But a driver in work got done in a van, by a camera van

None of the official databases record the unladen weight of a vehicle, which is the one that determines DPV status, and most manufacturers don't even declare it. It is therefore utterly impossible at present for any ANPR or camera system to determine if a vehicle is a DPV or not.

 

Even human plod or VOSA has no way to determine the unladen weight easily.

 

The kerb weight or mass in service is not the same thing as the unladen weight and is invariably heavier.

Quite correct,  I was towing, card in the tacho and cruise control on the go. They tell me that the cameras are now linked to the DVSA too.

My little quoting Courier van is technically classed as a panel van. I have a phobia of thinking every parked up white van is a camera van after having a few narrow squeaks, to say nothing of gatsos and average speed cameras.
50 on normal roads , 60 on d/c.

Cameras are getting very clever,  10 years ago or more on the A38 in the West Country there was a camera site with a sensor to measure the vehicle height,   anything over a given height doing over 50mph was ticketed.  Friend got done in a Scania,  he was keeping up with traffic in a 60mph area at about 53- 54 mph  ( it was limited to 56mph)   cars got through unscathed,  he got a ticket.

Get a high end Tom Tom,   anyone spots a camera van notifies the system of its location by pressing one button on the screen,,  all other users are immediately notified if they are within half a mile.  As you go past you get asked if it is still there,  yes or no,   again one push button.   It also gives you your average speed on stretches of road with gatsoes.

There’s an app called Waze that does the same - it’s really good satnav for avoiding traffic too tbh!

You don’t ever get stopped then (and you might as well run the lot on false plates anyway - it’s part of the caravan club rules I believe)!
