worked at a land rover specialist for several years when i was a mechanic and i would steer clear of the disco 3 and early disco 4's with the 2.7 engine. i think they rectified issues on the 3.0.

i done countless snapped cranks, timing belt tensioners splitting from the block, egr's, turbos, air compressors, suspension bushes etc etc etc

id personally look at a d2, could pick up a decent one for 4k. land cruisers probably a fair bit more than that but they're 3.0l straight six engines are bulletproof.

The D4 were 3lt not 2.7 but they still have crank issues, seems to be look of the draw which is a shame as they look so good and perform v well, they just ain’t reliable as a second hand car.

You can get some very early d4's with the 2.7 and i believe they changed the oil pump to try and rectify the crank issue on the later 3l But yes they definitely still go bang!

My half brother only entertains Land Cruisers and Shoguns, not so much the towing capability, but reliability.

The 51 plate Shogun I had was a disaster front wheel bearings, dual mass flywheel switches on gearbox front wheel bearings again and wiped out abs sensor at great cost! A Friday night machine I guess. Stick with Toyota as every middle east war lord has a fleet of them with 50 cal's bolted to the back!! Don't see many discos with the same

Similar experience with a 53 grey import from Cyprus, final straw was timing chain snapped at 70mph resulting in engine grenading with it being an import Mitsubishi didn’t want to know.  I owned a 99 Nissan Terano  2.7td followed by a 03 3.0 Patrol and both were brilliant motors, easy to work on and virtually trouble  free. The patrol was an excellent towing vehicle too.

There is a workaround to replace the chain tensioner for avoiding this, they where the weak link and are like 150gbp, easy install. But a few engines went out before it was spotted. Otherwise the later ones seem bullet proof and thirsty.

Long gone now. Trying to get from outside lane on A1 to hard shoulder coasting with no power steering or brakes and smoke pouring out from under bonnet etc was enough for me. Plenty of grunt for sure but a very agriculture engine. Was shit at towing,  way too soft on back suspension.
