French was also the language of England for centuries. Thank God some people want to take back control. No more critiquing from the 1 November.

The common people spoke the common tongue, and the nobles spoke French, and did so up  until Edward III had an epiphany about being English and decided we should all speak the common tongue.

I agree (with what I interpret as) your broader observation Mark, but disagree with (what I interpret as) your overarching disagreement with the entirety of my post  ?   As ever, mine was (at least in part) la langue dans la joue in the hope that someone might present a better argument and justification for latin nomenclature than I had previously considered. ??

Mate, the entire scientific community have been presenting a compelling arguement for standardisation since the days of Carl Linnaeus.
Honi soit qui mal y pense.

Is it right to suggest that the romans only took over the land up to Northumberland and then found resistance?

Read "Britannia and Germania" by Agricola. The son in law of the roman general who conquered England and Wales.
