What would you have done?

I can't really see any problem coming back, the sale would have to fall through and the new owners then want to pursue you, that doesn't sound like the sort of property that gets sold at auction.

I agree it's a tricky one when you see people working unsafely, and you have the gear to do it better. I don't think you can do more than offer something fair, and then it's up to them to choose. After all they could drive down the road like a lunatic next, and you have a car.....

Sometimes it works out though, last year I stopped to offer help to some people with ladder and bowsaw out. Only beer money but more importantly it led to a recommendation to their friend and so far two days work at nice rate so glad I stopped.

Yes.
However I'd like to avoid being in the same situation again.
How do you know who's tree it is?

I dont think there is a problem here as a contractor we arent obliged to reasonobly check every customers house deeds or tenancies. The chances of any comeback in your scenario are minimal. I guess if you need to avoid this happening again you need to not help out in similar situations (a 75 year old up a tree somewhere else cutting a tree down in a conservation area or TPO could obviously have some implications) and make sure you have in writing that the customer is the tree owner...part of your quote.

After a wet morning, we came back from the yard to an afternoon of chain grinding and admin [emoji51]
Looked out the window...

My 75-80 year old neighbour is up the tree again.

A while back he asked me for a price, I told him a morning for two guys to remove it.
(Probably 3hours)
£150 as your my neighbour.
He grinned and told me he'd do it himself.
I advised caution and a soas.
He used an electric jigsaw....

So today I see him and say: look I'll put it on the ground safely without breaking the 3 telecom wires through it and you can clear the mess. £75
I do it he grins.

So lunchtime today he's at it again.
Now let me explain.
He's a multi millionaire.
Owns a vast portfolio of properties commercial and domestic.
But he's still an old man about to fall out the tree.
I can't watch anymore.
Me and my colleague put the tree on the ground carefully.

At which point a local builder pops by.
Takes one look at the tree and says
The house isn't yours yet mate.
Be careful...
[emoji51][emoji51][emoji51]
Turns out he bought it at auction, and has paid for it, just waiting on conveyancing.
??‍♂️??‍♂️??‍♂️
Hindsight suggestions gentlemen?
