 A dependable permanent 4x4 system, ]..

But "permanent 4X4" actually mean 1 wheel, front or back, not both. When you lock the centre diff you get 1 wheel front and one back.

Unless you fit lockers to the axel diffs you will never get all 4 wheels turning in the sticky stuff.

Huck, do defenders not come with a rear axle diff lock as standard to compliment the centre diff ?

Was a bit tongue in cheek definitely but when I did a bit of competing with landy the definition of stuck and so penalty points was you couldn't get yourself or team out.
Our mog didn't have a winch unfortunately and was normally really stuck when the chipper effectively became a anchor digging in the ground even at full lift.

Only taking the mickey....

Agree about the mogs when the bottom of chipper’s buried and you’re up to your axles you’ve got problems.

Not keen on L200's but this is for sale for less than 6k on arbbay (facebook) 53k miles

Had a nearly new L200 double cab as a rental a few months ago. It had a lot more go and was much more economical than my beloved 110 (Td5) on the road. It is also much bigger, more up here with a 130. It seemed like a reasonable option for on road towing etc. Forced every log I could fit into the back and I didn't really notice it was there.

However, if you ever venture into the rough stuff, probably not for you. The lowest point at the front of the car was an oil cooler (engine or transmission, didn't bother checking) protected only by a ridiculously flimsy bit of tin. One rock or stump and that's game over. Angles and ground clearance fairly poor and low range not all that low.

Selectable 2X4 also creates problems when you want low speed control on good surfaces, normally if you want low range you have to be in 4x4 and where grip is good it then winds up the transmission and manoeuvres like a pig.

Virtually all axles have a diff, the diff allows each wheel to turn at a different speed, which makes going round corners much easier, as the outside wheel effectively overtakes the inside wheel, so needs to turn faster. This also means the diff only drives the wheel which requires least force to turn. You can see this when you jack up one side of a car and engage drive, only the wheel off the ground spins.

So 2 wheel drive cars are only really 1 wheel drive, but the wheel that drive swaps from side to side.

With permanent 4x4 they simply add another diff between the 2 axles, so now which ever of the 4 wheels that requires the least force is driven. Generally you can lock the centre diff, this then means 1 wheel on the front axle will drive and 1 on the rear axle.

To get genuine 4x4 you need diff locks on all the diffs.
