Why I love using ladders for tree work

Alaskan milling is the last time I used a straight ladder! I’m petrified of the things these days and if I use them now will probably clip in before going up a big Tree on them.. Another thing is they can encourage really unsafe and sloppy Tree work from my experience.. having done some really amazingly stupid things myself just to get a job finished quick or if it’s over ran off ladders the temptation is there if they are.

Good post. I don't like working off ladders particularly but for access why wouldn't you? I reduced this birch this morning, had to go up twice as the spread was too far to climb across. Very leggy, did all the climbing in 45 mins due to the 20 second ascent, wouldn't have trusted a union I'd not inspected to get up there on

Ladders are designed for aerial access, leaning against a tree makes them no less dangerous than throwing a throw line over a branch you cant see well from the floor?. You can test both but a ladder supports most of your weight, its a known quantity to.

Reduces climber fatigue, increases speed of access, enables A frame use for pole work on lower outer or inner crowns, plus more.

Once ascended into the tree, you install your climbing line so the next ascent is tied in, combined with a ladder, access is faster and safe.
