You do know that they make some of the most reliable cars available?

The benefit is safer cars on the road.

I'm talking about cars in the UK, although some of the least reliable are Japanese brands.

If you follow your argument then scraping all cars after 6 months would be better but hardly sensible or practical.

I think it is very rare that an accident is the fault of the vehicle, compared to driver error ...

True but I cant see any government proposing MOT / driver training / re testing for the humans. Just look at the affront caused in this thread re trailer licences & now you want to retrain / test ALL drivers.......... ;)

Nah. I don't think so.

Think you'll find the absolute opposite is true. Honda at the top of the pile from memory.

Lol.

I'm not sure it's that simple any more. I think some of the Honda's are the most reliable, but those made in the UK! When I googled first time MOT failures some of the brands were Japanese, but to be honest I've not idea where they are built.

Going back to the original question, I would suggest more police on the roads pulling over obviously dodgy vehicles would be better than MOTind more cars. It's very rare to drive about without seeing various lights not working, dodgy plates or, dare I say, overloaded trucks. Up the fines to cover the police and it'll not cost the tax payer anything.

One thing that has always amazed me is that you can pass an MOT with an inaccurate or non working speedo. Unless your speedo is within 10% accurate then you are at the mercy of any speed camera

Perhaps a fairer way would be the ability to only issue a 6 month certificate on an older vehicle that has been clearly patched up for test or even one that has had a bad failure history

Speedo can read higher than actual but an IVA test on a modified vehicle checks it. That's like if you are doing 70mph but reading 80 it is OK but if you are doing 70 and reading 69 it is a fail . MOT should have the facility to check same as the ministry stations have. If you have not messed with your wheel sizes or your gearing your speed should always read accurately enough not to trigger a camera.
