Old engineer I work with calls them shifters, did his apprenticeship in Huddersfield in the 60s.

Mate in his 20s also calls them shifters, he was in the navy.

Well, as I've always called them adjustable spanners, which is unnecessarily clunky, I think I'll start calling them shifters. 

Maybe people will just assume I've been to sea.

I was always under the impression it was particularly Bahco adjustable spanners that were known as shifters.

 

I usually abbreviate to ‘adjustable(s)’ btw, peds. Like a Labrador.

I have a digital left handed wall papering mallet . That's well handy .
