tree-fancier123 straight out of the blocks with a contentious take. 'A slice of Germany forever....' That would have made us no better than that which we fought against. As it was, Stalin did indeed keep what he fought for and Poland ('the country on wheels'), the Baltic States and Ukraine fell under the Iron Curtain, with parts of Germany becoming Poland and parts of Poland becoming Ukraine. The 'orderly and humane' displacement of peoples that followed was anything but, and as we celebrated VE Day Europe was plunged into further bloodshed and turmoil as old scores were settled. The conflict between Poland and Ukraine was particularly brutal.

Yeah, I keep waiting for the right one. Should have kept the little Takeuchi 1.6 from a few years back.

😂😂😂Ambiguity SP/TA you couldn’t lie straight in bed wee man. That is your high level strategic view of the situation I gather. Venezuela 🇻🇪 and Norway 🇳🇴 !!!!!! ??????

what got me about WW2 is when they say unconditional surrender or whatever - if I was in charge I would have wanted the land we fought for - a slice of Germany forever. Let the other allies keep a slice each and the German language would have to become illegal. That was the proper way all through history

They call him "Diggerless Dempsey" which is better than than "Dégeulass Dempsey" Few will understand this play of words...

We should start a History thread maybe... How about 'Making the news today in.....(choose your year) ' ? e.g, on this date, the 20th January in 1945 the fourth inauguration was held of President Roosevelt. It'll either be the most learned and courteous thread on Arbtalk, or if someone picks a contentious subject more in keeping with 'Making the news today' and 'Potus'.

You don’t need or use a heavy lift vessel to repair jackets or platforms. You never mentioned onshore wind or solar in your op. But there’s a multitude of large crawler or mobile cranes in the UK configured for that kind of work by way 😞😞. What part of store Oil did you fail to comprehend ( Strategic oil reserve and Commachio company there’s something to sit in front of your coal fire and educate yourself with tonight) . SP/TA you are trying to sound knowledgeable about industries you have no knowledge or experience of and it shows big time. Solar and wind won’t cut it if the shit hits the fan, even the most green of green leftards gets that.

Yes Russian economy had already fallen way behind since it became a centralised economy in 1917, who knows how they might have been with better rulers given all the resources available to them. The british economy largely depended on imports from the empire and its manufacturing was in the hands of a wealthy minority. Once it had to pay world prices for materials the wealthy largely bailed out. What it did have was a well educated middle class and technocrats which not only provided the science that developed innovative solutions Chain Home, cavity magnetron, Colossus amongst many others, details of which were freely given to US who benefited very well from the gift. Despite the set back to the economy it remains a good place to live and work although Canada and Australia were tempting. The national insurance scheme actually means I would only spend 60% of my life earning 🙂 but that probably won't last for the next generation as the Gini ratio moves to the american way. The answer is probably that there never would have been an invasion of europe; that depended on our half american prime minister persuading Roosevelt, to deal with Europe first while the bulk of the German army were engaged in Russia. Japan made a fundemental mistake in attacking America when they did, this doomed Hitler. Japan was in an onerous position, already embargoed by US and, like Britain dependent on imports. Their miscalculation was in thinking if they swept up all the colonial assets of the French, Dutch and British once Germany occupied mainland Europe , their main enemy now now occupied fighting germany for the las six months and with the incursion into China stalled, America would intervene. It would not have. Eventually there would have been a war between Japan and US but too late to save Europe. The axis were a dysfunctional alliance whereas America, Britain (which headed the commonwealth of nations, many still colonies) and Russia (less so) were coordinated. The fly in Hitler's plan to create a reich which could out compete the american economy depended on the securing of land and resources in eastern europe, he thought he had settled a deception on Chamberlain but 31 March 1939 Chamberlain had signed an agreement with France and Poland (which Russia was planning to invade) that they would come to their aid should Germany attack. German plans depended on taking Poland in order to get to their goal of the agricultural lands of Ukraine and the oil fields to the south of USSR. When Hitler invaded Poland in September 1939 and Russia was given the east Poland two months later as a feint, Hitler did not expect Chamberlain to declare war. So he had to bring forward his contingency plan to attack France through the low countries.

Been busy last couple of days (probably spreadsheets and stuff like that). His Greenland thing is another - and getting more frequent "WTF" moment. He cannot invade because he would be kicked out of NATO, a good chance that would mean the US would also struggle to maintain bases in NATO countries... which threatens US security world wide. Which is why he is going for $700 billion estimation to buy it. The cynic might think that a Venezuelan won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Peace prize people are Norwegians and these are the 2 countries he is thinking of attacking... However it is nothing at all to do with security - as far as I can tell there is no escalating threat from Russia to the US, a long way for China to sail, and any missiles from either over Greenland would currently be intercepted. All to do with the climate change he doesn't believe in, melting the ice so Greenlands minerals can be exploited. The riches are worth far more than the 700 billion he wants to buy it with. And the Peace Prize.

Agreed, very interesting. Something must have moved to create that tension. That smaller trunk, (or is it another bigger, aerial, root?), that's being girdled - has that leaned over at some point? It doesn't look to be vertical and seems to be welding to the main trunk. More photos required.

Suspected as much.

Of course, heavy lift vessel would be fk a use on the onshore windfarms or solar farms. Likewise a strike on an oil platform could not be repaired due to the same lack of a heavy lift vessel. Take out a subsea cable or a subsea oil / gas pipe, it is the same vulnerability, perhaps you should appreciate north sea oil / gas is very vulnerable to subsea attacks.

Good point. Any idea how long the alkalinity takes to dissipate? I've been dressing various fruit trees and shrubs around the garden every time I empty the ash pan, about once a week on average. For the potash, to aid fruiting, not to address a soil acidity issue. Each tree/plant has probably had 1 or 2 pans every year for the last 5 years maybe. No adverse affects yet, but I'm just wondering if I need to ease off if the soil is getting more and more alkaline. I could test it I suppose but .........

Large tropical hardwood beams; how to sell them...?
5thelement replied to nepia's topic in General chat
As a couple of beams, not worth much at all after transport, unless you can find someone local who wants it. We used to re saw lots of Douglas and Pitch pine from demolition jobs, usually old Mills from all over Lancashire. Delivered in by the artic load though. There is a guy in West Sussex, (Woodlouse Industries on Instagram) who might take them off your hands, I would be surprised if the value wiped their own arse though. Bonne chance 👍 -

p.s. wood ash is an easy, cheap and often readily available source of alkali, plus other nutrients. The soil around me is a bit acidic so I add some to the soil whenever I plant anything and thereafter occasionally dump a scoop at the base of smaller trees I'm growing.

Thanks Squaredy. The cut wood has a red tinge to it as claimed by the owner and it's softwood; Douglas makes perfect sense. There was a slight smell to the timber when cut despite its age so again an indicator of Douglas surely. Thanks all; can't wait to break the news re the valuable tropical hardwood! @Squaredy any thoughts on value? The piece of string is 'that' long! Sale will be down to matey; I'm not getting involved!

You could try digging a hole bigger than you need and planting the tree inside a carboard box of your desired soil. Trim the cardboard to soil level and soon you wont notice its there and eventually it rots. Once the root ball gets through the cardboard it will be big enough to cope with poor soil.
